Sabres at Connells Point

Sabres Racing at Connells Point
On any given Saturday afternoon during the sailing season, you will see 8 to 13 Sabres lining up for the start, easily recognisable by their single sail, which has the top portion coloured in red. They are a great sight. Sabres are an excellent all round, fairly forgiving 12.5 foot dinghy, which suit anybody between the ages of 14 to ??? years. We have a current Sabre sailor who is 80, who shall remain nameless. He doesn't look it, and he sails alright too!!

Sabres are a particularly great choice for the ladies as well. We currently have four ladies who sail, one who weighs around 50kilos. She can be challenged over 15knots, but conversely, the more average weighted person may be equally as challenged in lighter breezes. The majority of sailors absolutely love the Sabre in higher breezes, yes they do get up and plane, having originally been designed to suit the choppy waters in Port Phillip Bay. Sabres can be purchased in either fibreglass or in plywood, and can be fully fitted out, or not, depending on your requirements and budget. For those who are keen on building their own, building notes and a number, can be purchased from the National Sabre Sailing Association, and with the NSW templates you can cut out, and put together, your own kit boat. There is also a second hand market for Sabres, and you can pick up one for as little as $1,000.

For further detailed information you can refer to the National Sabre Website www.sabre.org.au Perhaps though, the best first option, is to come down to Connells Point on any Saturday afternoon, and to talk to any of the Sabre sailors, who would only be too happy to help. We do have an available club boat, which with some advance notice, could be booked by you for a sail test ride.
Hope to see you soon.
